November 2009

  • poisoned girl - 26 November 2009 We felt like Alice in a different kind of wonderland when we stumbled into Gizem Vural's whimsical drawings of circle-blushed, bob-haired girls, mushrooms on her head, and birds tweeting love notes. See her land comes alive on her blog, or hop on over to her Etsy shop for prints. If you buy either Ballerina Legs or Poisoned Girl, she'll give you a sketch work of your choice that are in her shop for free.
  • arkitektur - 21 November 2009 We love Vana's representational drawings, seamlessly merging travel, architecture and art. Her drawings are available as prints in her Etsy shop, aptly named Arkitektur, mostly done while visiting these magnificent places.
  • mona sue vintage - 20 November 2009 The lovely ladies behind Mona Sue Vintage have emailed us of their exciting fashion show. Proceeds from the sales of dresses from their fashion show - now up on their Etsy shop - will raise funds for Allant Institute, providing funding for free rehabilitative and wellness groups to people with Parkinson's and recovering from traumatic brain injuries in Austin, TX. Take a peek.
  • World Weekend Italy - 6 November 2009 In the first of our new 'World Weekend' series, we take a look at five of Italy's indie shops. World Weekend rolls out every Friday, featuring some fine indie finds from different places in the world to accompany you through the weekend...
  • Max Wanger Photography - 4 November 2009 I chanced upon the photography of Max Wanger through a tweet from a friend. She was gushing over the details, and I can see why. One could almost feel the love between the couples, pouring out of the photographs.
  • Jane Joss - 3 November 2009 If nature has style, it would make leaves in sweet colors such as these...

October 2009

  • An Inaugural Affair - 17 October 2009 Our. First. Issue. Is. Now. Out!! I'm very happy to announce that the time has finally came! Thank you very, very much if you have been waiting patiently for this day, and for all of your support, best wishes and encouragements. I truly appreciate them.
  • A Wall Of Ideas - 13 October 2009 IdeaPaint can turn virtually anything you can paint into a high-performance dry-erase surface. What got me very excited is its use for @Home!
  • Bespoke Illustrators Project - 9 October 2009 Bespoke Press opened an invitation to aspiring illustrators back in May and, "10800 foot treadled impressions, 1800 sheets of cotton paper and 30 new ink colours later," they have now launched these 10 new prints in their shop! I would hasten you to get in there quick, because each print is a limited edition run of only 150 prints.
  • Studio M.M.E. and Polarity - 5 October 2009 One of our contributing writers, Megan Eckman (hello Megan!), wrote me about her new work over at her studio, Studio M.M.E.. I went over to have a peek, and loved what I found. Megan has teamed up with Catherine Ivins of Polarity, transforming her artwork into magnetized art necklaces that you can change on a whim.
  • Merry Merry-Go-Round - 2 October 2009 I was recently doing a research for factoids on carnivals and carousels for an article, and couldn't help searching for imagery too. I remember vividly an imagery of my childhood, upon entering an indoor attraction, the first thing I saw was a grand carousel at the very center.
  • Lori Earley - 1 October 2009 I couldn't get enough of Lori Earley's elongated, deeply enchanting portraits. One could almost look into the eyes of each femme fatale and wonder what has held you so captive. Was it the emotional story into their arcane world? Or was it their ethereal gaze?
  • Turn Over A New Leaf - 1 October 2009 Are you now inspired to raid your bookcase for those books long forgotten but can't bear to throw away?

September 2009

  • Fox & Clover - 29 September 2009 I get very excited every time I see new creative ideas, something that stops you in your tracks and makes you think, "Now why didn't I think of that?" That's just how it was when I discovered Fox & Clover on Etsy. I simply loved the way Sabrina presented her products! Her simple photo styling on chalkboard does well in bringing out her concept and technique she uses for her jewelry and dishes.
  • Mag Love - 18 September 2009 Sometimes I would take the train to work if I couldn't catch a ride with my colleague. The best thing about going to the train station is that I could pop in to the newsstand and revel in the many magazines that they have. So last Monday, I went about my usual ritual, and this caught my eye...
  • Megan Isabella - 18 September 2009 Here's a gem hailing from the Perth, Western Australia that I was perusing via a link sent to me by my dear sister (thanks, Adek!). The first things that caught my eye were her paperdoll illustrations, aptly named Paper Doll Project. Childlike and a little chubby, why not let her transform you in a paper doll?
  • Terry's Socks - 17 September 2009 After having perused several design blogs (the ones in English, naturally) for a while now, I got quite curious what the folks in Czech are up to when it comes to design and decor. So I did a search for 'Czech design blog', but somehow landed here instead.
  • Tear Sheets Inspiration - 14 September 2009 Being a designer, I have gotten into a habit of collecting printed materials that I could refer to for inspiration. Recently, having started on planning and working on the magazine, I have been flipping through a bit more mags than I would in an entire year, most of which are borrowed of course. Because there are some pages that I would really liked to tear out and keep, it would be great to just start off a digital tear sheet compilation.

August 2009

  • Hello Lovelies... - 16 August 2009 Welcome to STYL! My name is Riz Sedek and I'm pretty much writing this as a pre-launch greeting to welcome you to the new magazine. I have been wanting to create a magazine since my college days. At that time the idea seems so huge, and I didn't exactly know the how or even the what, though I had an inkling of an idea that I wanted it to celebrate the arts and the indie's. Fast forward several years, two job changes, a move to another country, and of course several more candles on the birthday cake, and I'm writing to you now in preparation for the launch. Sometimes you just have to stop, drop, and roll with it.
