On Purpose

Today I've been looking at shops closer to home.

If you have been a follower of my other blog, rizsedek.com, you would know that I came to Czech Republic for love. Now after seeing that relationship fall apart, I began to question the purpose of my being here, and the work I do particularly this magazine. Why am I here? Why have I been put here, of all places (English-speaking places that would be easier for me to get by). I could leave, after all the reason holding me here was gone. But somehow I felt compelled to stay, as if there was another reason I hadn't yet known, and it has been so made, consciously or not, that I will continue staying here for at least another year.

Well, while I wouldn't want to get into all the philosophical details of my thoughts here on this blog (I will perhaps on my other blog), what I felt about being here though, is that I love it here. I love the peacefulness, the slow-paced life, the good-natured people, the accessible nature. And I have begun to feel more like home.

While browsing through these shops today, most of them are in Prague, some are in other areas of Czech Republic, I thought to myself and said, "Yes, I do want to stay."

And so, where Styl is concerned, there will be a slight change in the way I present things. The first, and you would have probably noticed, is to write authentically. Authenticity would be my guide, as I journey through my craft and my work.

What about you? Has there been a point in your life when you question your purpose?

Mag Love

Sometimes I would take the train to work if I couldn't catch a ride with my colleague. The best thing about going to the train station is that I could pop in to the newsstand and revel in the many magazines that they have. So last Monday, I went about my usual ritual, and this caught my eye...

Elle Decor, CZ

...and I knew I just had to have it. It's probably the burst of color and the eclectic decor on the front cover of Elle Decor Czech Republic. I was saving a post about it as a tear sheet entry, but then I read Holly Becker's post on decor8 about her love for magazines that I thought a linkback to her post would be just the perfect companion for it. (Coincidence that it's Elle, no?) Holly has articulated it so very well and it is the way I feel about it also. Nothing can beat snuggling up under a warm cover reading a book or flipping through a magazine sipping a warm cup of tea. That, plus my love for prints. Though I enjoy perusing digital mags occasionally, there is something about being in print that simply beckons. Now you know why STYL will also be in print. :)

Hello Lovelies...

Welcome to STYL! My name is Riz Sedek and I'm writing this as a pre-launch greeting to welcome you to the new magazine. I have been wanting to create a magazine since my college days. At that time the idea seems to be huge, and I didn't exactly know the how or even the what, though I had an inkling of an idea that I wanted it to celebrate the arts and the indie's. Fast forward several years, two job changes, a move to another country, and of course several more candles on the birthday cake, and I'm writing to you now in preparation for the launch. Sometimes you just have to stop, drop, and roll with it. I enjoy designing the pages for the magazine and organizing its contents with other talented indie artists around, and seeing them in print where I can touch and feel is really what makes me tick. I hope that you will enjoy the magazine and if you have any questions, please do drop me a line at hellostyl[at]stylmagazine.com.

I'll leave you with this article to ponder. See you (right here) at our launch.

xo, Riz
